Five tips for winning an eBay auction

Most people have bidded on something on eBay at one time or another. Chances are you have likely lost an auction for an item you desparately wanted to win. What are some ways you can increase your chances of winning your next eBay auction?

Five Tips for winning an eBay auction:

  1. Get in on the bidding early on- Bidding on an item early on in the auction period is an effective strategy because there are quite a few people who simply won't bid on an item that has competition. The sooner you show you are serious about buying this product, the better chance you will have. This step is most important in categories that get fewer page views. It all boils down to competition, and for you the less competition the better the chance you'll win your item!
  2. Set a proxy bid- Setting up a proxy bid means that you are setting the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the item. This is important because you are the only one that will know what your maximum bid level is. If the next person comes to bid on an auction and you have a higher proxy bid, they will be given an automatic message that they have been outbid. This is a very effective strategy to use especially if you can't be at your computer when the auction is ending. There have been countless amounts of eBay newbies who lose auctions simply because they didn't set up a proxy bid.
  3. Bid odd amounts that are just above the standard bid- This seems so basic to me, but I am constantly amazed at how few people actually use this strategy. For example, if eBay is telling you that the minimum you must bid is $30, put in a bid of $30.02 or some odd number. This is extremely effective when it comes to outbidding proxy bids. Many people who set proxy bids set them at even amounts, and by knowing that you can use this odd amount bidding to your advantage. By bidding $30.02 you are able to become the high bidder if the proxy was set at $30, rather than having to bid up to $31.
  4. Do some sniping- Sniping is bidding on an auction in the last few seconds. The strategy behind this move is basically to make it impossible for anyone else to outbid you because time has run out. I know when I first started on eBay I lost several auctions due to sniping, and I have won many more since I realized that this strategy can be very effective. There are numerous sniping softwares out there that will automatically bid at the last second for you, but I recommend just doing this yourself unless you want to buy and sell on eBay for a living.
  5. Be attentive- This is the most basic of the five tips, but it is certainly very important. You can't expect to win an eBay auction if you pay very little attention to what is going on. Keep an eye on that item that you treasure so much, and see what kind of action is happening on it. Most of all, if you are bidding on a big dollar item that you really want to get ahold of, make it a point to be online at the end of the auction.

These five tips will help you in your quest to win an eBay auction. Don't get discouraged if you miss out on some items that you really wanted, because there is simply no way to win them all. Create an atmosphere that gives you the possibly chance to win, and let the chips fall as they may!
